Jab - Hook - Upper Cut

With the overwhelming growth of popularity in MMA in Toronto, spurred by the UFC, we as fans of the sport were inspired to create an MMA video as a tribute and promotion for boxing and mixed martial arts.

Fight night was the first of its kind for me. The task was to add motion graphics to MMA footage we shot at a mixed martial arts gym. My main concern was figuring out how to capture the full essence of the video and how to utilize the graphics without overshadowing the video sequence. Looking back over the process, I can't even recount the number of times where I worked on something for an hour, only to delete and start all over again. However, in the end, I think these were all necessary risks I took in order to take this production to the next level.

To really capture the essence of the video, I decided to involve some of the team by asking them to list some words that they associate with "fighter." I received a bunch of good words I could use from courage, rage, power, and determination. Then there were unusable words such as "tight" and "hard"... I'll stop there.

With the good words, I matched them to their respective images and subsequently created simple graphics to portray them. Twitch was applied to exaggerate impact and power and optical flares were used to create atmosphere and dynamic in the video.

As I mentioned, this is our company's first ever completed motion graphics video. The learning curve was steep as I gained a lot of technical knowledge from this project alone. We hope that this increases your interest in the sport. Enjoy the video!
