I was looking to expand my portfolio into the dance world and Teego is a dancer/choreographer. It just made sense to get together and mix our two passions. It is always a challenge to photograph people in motion but I really wanted to garnish my skills by understanding how the body moves and how it can be best captured by a camera.

After talking this idea over with Teego, she gave me full access to all of her dancers. As a photographer, this was amazing because I was allotted full artistic freedom. It also opened many doors of possible film projects which we collaborated on throughout the next several years. On top of this amazing opportunity, Teego began introducing me to choreographers she brought over to Toronto from the United States, which allowed me to network with a dance crew from San Diego. I went over there and spent a week filming a mini documentary for Formality, about their journey to a major dance show.

Our most recent project involved a late night photo-shoot with her main dance crew that she has competing for major competitions. It was a tight shoot because Teego and her crew were practicing for an upcoming competition until late one night, and the Silverpoint team got together with Vybe to start the photo-shoot after the practice. As always there is always a challenge in every job and my biggest obstacle was making some of the dancers, who had never worked with me before, become quickly familiarized and comfortable so I could get them to pose for the camera. Everyone was open for direction and the shoot was a great success.

One thing I have learned over these five years is how to instruct a person to compose themselves in front of the camera in order to capture them in a flattering pose while they are in motion. This is also helpful in the corporate world because I am better able to direct executives in their business spaces.

Teego is a wonderful person to work with and I have even recently signed-up my six year old daughter at her dance studio in Markham, Ontario. I have to thank Teego for all the great opportunities over the last five years, and I really look forward to continue our collaborations between the photography/film world and the dance world.

Recently we once again had the pleasure to work with Sonya Latreille, the Product Manager for All-Clad and Rowenta Beauty, on instructional styling videos teaching consumers and stylist on how to use the new Rowenta 2 in 1 Ceramic Ionic Curling Iron (Straight & Curl). The idea was to produce a video that demonstrates to both professionals and amateurs alike, the tricks and techniques used to create 5 distinct hairstyles for the modern and fashionable woman.

Suffice to say it ‘s not very hard for us to agree to projects produced by Rowenta as we often find ourselves in trendy locales, surrounded by beautiful women, and working with familiar, smart, and kind people. But some of you might be asking; how do the “manly men” of Silverpoint accomplish the task of instructing women on how to use a feminine product successfully?

Well, apart from the guidance and vast knowledge from experts such as Sonya and Toronto Fashion Week lead stylist & Rowenta Beauty artist Dee Dagher. The key to our success when creating any instructional video has always been to produce a piece that not only effectively instructs the target demographic, but also has the ability to teach even our selves - no matter how familiar or foreign the product. So that’s right ladies, what we have here is in fact the first ever, media production house who can confidently and fabulously: straighten, curl, wave, and volumize your hair.

As a result the video itself was a huge success, receiving numerous compliments within the industry and countless DVD copies readily requested. The video was also used through online distribution and on their website here with great exposure.

I met Spex (or Thrizzo) a few years ago through our good friend Jezz. He mentioned that Spex had an incredible flair for creating music and orchestrating tracks for the Hip Hop industry. As fate would draw our talents together, I bumped into him performing on Yonge St., and equipped with my camera, I took the opportunity to start filming. The result was an interesting short about the drumming buskers who perform at Yonge and Dundas St., a popular location in downtown Toronto. If you would like to check out the video, please click here and read our previous blog about buskering.

After some time had passed, I realized a greater need for customized music for our clients. We had long exhausted the stock music out there and wanted to provide a much higher caliber of custom music to complement our videos and animations. If we were going to create a ‘cinematic’ experience, it was not only important that we could stimulate visually, but also through the power and emotion of sound. At this point, there was only one solution, Spex joining the Silverpoint team.

For the past few months working with Spex, I’ve realized that inspiration comes from many directions. I have always tried to keep an open mind, and I have quickly realized with the help of Spex, how visual ideas can inspire music, and how music has motivated me to test my visual art.

As with many things, words cannot describe what is best seen and heard. So I ask you to press play and enjoy one of the latest collaboration between Spex and Silverpoint Media.

Our good friends at Pdoink have released their first iPad app based on their 2011 Moonbeam Children’s Book Gold Award winning title - A Magical Tale in Mudd Hollow.

To some of our regular readers the book might sound familiar and you'd be absolutely correct. Five months ago Raymond our animator/motion-graphic designer extraordinaire created an animated video of A Magical Tale in Mudd Hollow and Sparkle Beach, a short bedtime story also included in the book.
I love my iPhone. My colleagues find me a little crazy but I love how this phone can be a powerful tool both technically and creatively. As filmmakers it enables you to slate, create storyboards, calculate DOF, dispatch release forms and even act as a light source. The great thing is that the features continue to expand as long as apps continue to be produced.

One example of these apps I use quite frequently is Sun Seeker. This app lets you know when and where the sun will rise and set, today or in the future. One of the amazing offerings from this app is the 3D View, which is an augmented reality view using the phone's GPS, accelerometer and camera to see the path of the sun with reference to time and the phone’s real time camera image. There are other views too, such as the angle of the sun overlaid on a Google Map of your current location or any location you choose to input.

This app is very useful when you are setting up a scene and need to be able to predict how the light will affect your shot a few hours later. It's also a huge benefit for planning the lighting for a time-lapse. In the example below numerous structures around us caused undesired lighting situations. Sun Seeker was able to tell me when and where to frame the camera in order to get our desired effect.
Much to our joy our latest project here at Silverpoint Media once again dealt with great food and great people. On a Friday evening as I was about to leave the studio I received a call from Keith – he asked whether I could join him on Saturday for a production meeting and lunch, at a new and tasty Northern Chinese restaurant located just north of Yonge and Bloor called Lee Chen Asian Diner.

I couldn’t say the reason I agreed to work on Saturday was completely due to the fact that I love what I do for a living, nor was it completely because the head honcho told me to go, and it definitely wasn’t only because Keith and I occasionally enjoy going on dinner dates together without our significant others – however, it may have been in large part due to the fact that frankly I’m a sucker for steamed dumplings. Yummy.

Getting back on track…Turns out Fred Lee, the owner of Lee Chen, had stumbled upon our work through mutual acquaintances, and just in time I might add. Having only been opened for a week, his marketing campaign was beginning to push forward with a quick release date for both a website and a couple 30 sec television commercials which were to air on Fairchild Television. The task for us within the short production schedule of less then one week, was to do the photography, design the promotional flyers, design the outdoor light panel menus, and of course create the 30 sec commercials, one in Mandarin and one in Cantonese.

However with production full steam ahead and our bellies full of dumplings (steamed + fried), wontons, beef noodle soup, almond fish, crispy tofu, black pepper beef, sesame paste rice balls, bubble tea, and Lee Chen’s famous Nutri 28 shake (stuffed) – the guys at Silverpoint pulled through and helped kicked off what will surely be a successful restaurant in the downtown core.

Having been on many shoots and in a variety of settings the opportunity to eat well on-set does not always present itself. However, typically this isn’t a problem. Whether filming a mine site, a heart attack surgery, or a CEO’s quarterly report, we as cinematographers are so engulfed in the subjects; hunger is often the furthest thing from our minds. But what happens when your subject becomes a delicious Steak Diane with a side of roasted potatoes and green beans? Well, you can only hope that the grumbling in your stomach doesn’t ruin the audio.

Recently the guys at Silverpoint Media had the opportunity to once again work with Marcy Mihalcheon the founder of MeMeMe Inc. on her new online cooking show Marcy Cooks it Real. The idea was to create webisodes that not only taught viewers a new recipe, but also inspired and showed the busy moms, dads, businessmen, students, and/or anyone who typically has no time to cook; that home cooked meals could be done on a busy schedule and could be done delectably.

Therefore the dilemma presented itself – how could we do a show that portrays a real working mom’s challenge of cooking a hearty meal while juggling issues such as, kids, social events, time constraints, etc.? Well, the answer was within the question itself. With a crew of 3 cameramen and a soundman, we went and filmed a typical evening at the Mihalcheon home - following Marcy from the time she came home after picking up her daughter, to preparing the food, to feeding the pets, to having the entire family (Marcy, Alan, and Evan) sitting down for a delicious home cooked meal.

But what was the best part about Marcy Cooks it Real? Having the absolutely tastiest on-set meal to date.

Because of this, I’ll have to go back a couple months to get you updated on one of my recent trips to LA. In late August, I had the wonderful opportunity to shoot some photography at the MTV Music Award swag room. It was exciting being involved with all the hustle and bustle of the event, as well as seeing some of todays relevant stars. But in actuality this wasn’t the highlight of my trip.

After the awards on one of my days off, I took a trip down to Venice Beach, a very interesting place full of many interesting people. With numerous activities and characters around every corner, the sites and sounds were endless. After checking out the local surfers, watching a few pick up basketball games, and grabbing street meet, I decided to take a walk down the boardwalk to Santa Monica Beach. It was there at the beach that I saw the famous “traveling rings”.

Completely captivated I stayed, watching seemingly ordinary men and women performing extraordinarily beautiful movements on the gymnastic like apparatus. Wanting to know more I introduced myself to Bruno Angelico, a local actor and “traveling rings” specialist, and asked him about the unique activity. He told me the rings originated in NYC and the only other ones were there in LA. What Bruno and a few others had done was transform the piece of exercising equipment into a device for artistic awe-inspiring movement – almost like a dance.

As I photographed Bruno I realized that his skill on the traveling rings were far above those of anybody else. The twists and flips that he performed were incredible to capture and in the end produced some fantastic photos. Below I’ve also posted one of Bruno’s videos that really show his amazing talent on the "traveling rings" - make sure you check out more of his videos on his youtube channel.

A lot of attention was dedicated to the realism of the foreground and background elements. Trees, grass, roads and topography were all based on satellite imagery to match the actual landscape. Unlike their predecessors, the new trees are highly detailed creating a sense of realism from both close and far away.

Passion

A powerful and overwhelming feeling that strips you from reality and launches you into a hyper-state of being.

The uncontrollable desire that drives our existence

When I think of passion, I can’t help thinking about the arts. I have been a passionate arts-person for as long as I can remember. For now, though, I want to tell you about my past passion for dance, which until recently, had dwindled to the side to make room for photography and film.

With the joint production between Silverpoint and living., a dance company based in Toronto and founded by Mario Fugnitto and Haley McPherson, both Keith and I got to dive into the world of dance again, on the contemporary side. We were delighted to work with two well respected dancers within the Canadian dancing industry. For me, however, it was like combining chocolate, whip cream and strawberries together in a bowl: simply delicious.

Revisiting the dancing world again, but combining it with my growing knowledge of the media world, allowed me to put two things that I cherish together. They compliment each other so well because dancers have a unique understanding of the way they can move their body to produce pleasing shapes and frames. Furthermore, professional cinematographers also have an understanding of shapes and framing which, when combined with dancing, allows for a lot of potentially nice shots.

When shooting a dance video, it is important to work alongside the choreographers to analyse their movement. This in turn allowed us to produce our own camera choreography because the movement of the dancers had to be complimented by our own movement. For instance, when Haley is in her white costume and doing a turn jump over Mario in the air, I chose to have a stable camera shot from a high angle off to the left side of center. This made the jump look bigger and gave it a bit of a concave look.

Keith was a great partner on set. With Keith on camera, I was able to concentrate on the camera position, shot list, and the dancers themselves. I had to act as the eyes for Mario and Haley and make sure that we had at least two good dance takes for each sequence.

Overall the final project was a success and I look forward to producing many more dance productions down the line with Silverpoint.

We used to shoot with a Sony EX-1 but have completely migrated to Canon 5D Mk2s and 7Ds. We have welcomed the change and fortunately so have our clients. They love the narrow depth of field and more cinematic feel of the image. But with all good things come the bad. The 5D Mk2 records in H.264 which is a highly compressed video codec. The other downfall is that the camera lacks some basic professional features such as peaking (highlights what is in focus) and zebra stripes (allows for gauging accurate exposure).

To our delight both issues have been addressed to varying degrees. First off the people at Technicolor collaborated with Canon to produce a "picture style" that allows the camera to pack more bits of info into that H.264 file and effectively increase dynamic range. It is great to see Canon willing to put continued effort into a camera that's three years old. I won't go into detail about the Technicolor picture style or CineStyle as they call it, since there are very informative articles widely available on the internet already. But for us we have definitely found an improvement in quality after introducing the Technicolor Cinestyle into our workflow. There is more detail in the shadows and more flexibility in colour correcting without making a mess of the image. The greatest part is that it is free and available here.

In addition, you will need to apply an "S" curve to the image during post-production to bring it back to where it should be, as the image will be quite "flat". We use Magic Bullet's LUT Buddy to apply the curve in Final Cut Pro. You can find the LUT Buddy here.

However to achieve the results that CineStyle provides, while filming it makes the image extremely low contrast and flat. Unfortunately this could make a shot a mess to focus. Recently I was just on a shoot where I had to frame a woman's face from a three quarter angle. She didn't have alot of makeup, the lighting made her eyes lighter in colour, and I was on a Canon 135mm 2.0L at 2.8 (I had a depth of field of 1"). With CineStyle running on the camera it would have been super difficult to nail focus. There simply wasn't enough contrast on her face to confidently pull focus on her. I discovered this while viewing the image without peaking enabled on the new Zacuto EVF (electronic viewfinder)! I was shocked.

Here enters the other piece of an almost symbiotic relationship with CineStyle. Zacuto released an EVF that has a pristine screen that shows off an amazingly sharp image and brings those professional features that the 5D Mk2 has been lacking... zebras and peaking. I used peaking on the entire shoot, confidently pulling focus because I was able to clearly see her eye in the shot. A task a definitely could not have accomplished without the EVF. Life is easy now... well maybe easier.

The EVF has buttons on the side where you can select a menu system or program quick select buttons so that you can select zebras and peaking right away without navigating a menu. The EVF has a wealth of other features as well, such as being able to view different frame lines, dual HDMI ports, false colour etc.

Another handy thing about the EVF is it's ability to assist in handheld shots. In one instance I had to be very light and portable, so I just had the camera with the EVF on a ball mount and ran around with it handheld. The EVF offered a third point of contact with my head and the whole form factor was Hasselblad style. It was quite stable and comfortable to use.

Again, i'm just briefly touching on CineStyle and the Zacuto EVF. You can find more detailed info on CineStyle here. And for the Zacuto EVF you can check out their website here. They have a series of videos that show off their product quite well.

To tie off I just really wanted to share my experience with these two new innovations to our field. I think the combination of CineStyle and the Zacuto EVF is essential. The 5D Mk2 started as an amazing camera and three years down the road it is just getting better.

After shooting the greatly anticipated living. dance video on an overcast Sunday morning in late August, a creative urge overcame Keith he decided that he was going to shoot a mini photo session with Mario and Haley… or in the dance industry Ebony and Ivory.

Armed with a Canon 5D, Keith positioned the two dancers on a painted brick wall with barred windows. The colourful alleyway transformed into a gothic and bleak setting. Haley's fair skin and Mario's dark complexion worked really well with the brick wall.

By getting up close to Haley and Mario, Keith was able to utilize the architecture and shear ruggedness of the building to his advantage. The sweeping angles also leant each photo a stretched and canted feeling.

There is something distinguishable about photographing dancers because of their understanding of how a human body moves. Thus, Mario and Haley were able to create some interesting shapes for Keith's frames. There is also a very dark and mysterious air to each photo, which was a combination of the way the dancers were positioning their bodies in relation to the building and the angles at which Keith was shooting from.

Overall, the collaboration between living. and Silverpoint Media Inc. was a huge success and we look forward to releasing the final dance video next week. So stay tuned for some more "Pure Street living."

With the summer starting to draw to a close - sorry to point out this depressing truth - we at Silverpoint decided it was high time that the entire team set off on a shoot-off. This time, two new members accompanied Keith, Stan, and Josh: Caroline and myself. We arrived on location, at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, at 8:30am and began scouting the area. Keith drew us all together and surprised us with the following rules:

1. We had from 9:30am to 12:00pm to shoot our footage

2. We were going to break for lunch and eat at the restaurant on location - which, by the way, was "off the charts" (as Keith would say)

3. When we got back to the studio around 2:30pm, we had until 5:00pm to compress, edit, and render out a final SDE of our footage

For those of us, like Stan and Josh, this was old news and they took on the challenge with smiles on their faces. Caroline and I, however, felt the stress level peak a lot more. Several amazing things struck me while I was at Brickworks. The first being that in a concrete jungle such as Toronto, there are still areas like Evergreen that allows one to escape the city, while still - ironically - being in the city. The busy street and crosswalk noises soon drowned away as we trekked deeper into the natural reserves behind the old Brick Work's factory.

Another thing that struck me is that nature is untamable, especially for a filmmaker. I have yet to hear of anyone, on location shooting, muster some kind of mother-nature force within them and command the sky and trees to do whatever he or she desires. Yet, there are these perfect, unchoreographed moments that appear just because the sun is at that particular angle at this particular time and the trees are blowing in this particular fashion. And I think it is the job of the photographer and cinematographer to be able to find those moments and capture them...

CAROLINE

For the first time while interning here at Silverpoint, I finally had the opportunity to pick up my camera, shoot and edit a video on my own. The one-day edit challenge that Keith placed upon us was daunting to say the least, as I had never used Final Cut before and barely knew how to turn my camera on, but with a bit of help from the team and lots of perseverance , I was able to finish my shoot-off.

To be honest, the most difficult part of the challenge for me wasn't learning how to use the equipment and software in a day, but choosing a specific aspect of Brickworks that I wanted to showcase. With so much going on, it was hard for me to find and tell a coherent story. Now I know for next time to pinpoint and focus in a specific direction that is best for me.

JENN

With the above reflections in mind, I also discovered some other important things to consider while shooting. This was my first shoot-off with Silverpoint and I learned afterwards that while the story and the moments are important, technique and consideration of equipment is equally important. I failed to consider that a rode mic would be a hundred percent better than my camera mic for an interview.

I also learned after my shoot that my monopod technique is still shaky and needs to be sharpened and firmly grounded such that my shots looks as if I were using a tripod. However, with colour correction, SmoothCam, and soundtrack pro, I was able to work with my footage and create some nice still nature shots.

JOSH

I had previously visited the Evergreen Brick Works a month ago on a complete whim. My girlfriend and I had been driving along Bayview Avenue when the combination of industrial red bricks, gardens, and park trails caught our eyes. Unfortunately on that day I was only caring my photography equipment, but knew that someday I would want to shoot a video there.

So, it came as quite a pleasant surprise when Keith decided that our next shoot-off would be at, but of course, the Brick Works. Like all other shoot-offs that I participated in, I wanted to take the opportunity to practice a particular style or technique. So without hesitation I grabbed our trusty Philip Bloom Slider, and darted to the area which was originally the Don Valley Brick Works. Unlike the others in the group whom were more attracted to the picturesque natural trails present at Evergreen, I was drawn to the red brick, the industrial, and at times grungy counterpart. And so I slid...

STAN

This was my first opportunity to shoot with the Canon 100mm 2.8L and it was a great experience. The lens has a new hybrid IS that allowed me to go handheld when presented with situations that would not allow the time to setup a tripod. The shots of the monarch butterfly, woodpecker, and bees are examples of how stable the IS can be. Another plus for this lens is that when the rain came I had no fear because it is weather-sealed. I did not have an ND for this lens so exposure was a challenge. I had to increase the shutter to compensate which also created a pleasing staccato effect to anything moving such as insects.

KEITH

Shooting behind the scenes of the Silverpoint shoot-off at Evergreen was a nice change from the regular shoot-off challenge. I was able to capture the entire team out on a shoot. I interviewed each of the members and they told me... actually instead of me telling you, just watch the video:

We all learned many things that bright, yet rainy, day, which I think will drastically improve our skill sets. Thanks Brick Works for allowing us to shoot your amazing grounds.

It is no surprise that multimedia and web communication has become an integral part for any company, large or small, to communicate efficiently with fellow employees, customers, and/or investors. We have personally observed this adaptation of web multimedia to be a growing trend, especially in the mining industry. More precisely, media such as video and animation has allowed some mining companies in the industry to update or inform investors about business reports, statistics, and/or trends in a timely, succinct, visual, and most importantly, entertaining manner.

Most recently Stan, Victor, and myself visited HudBay Minerals to document a quarterly report. However, we decided to add to what might have been a typical ordinary PDF Q2 quarterly report. Through a particular signature Silverpoint style, we applied a cinematic quality to the video of the President and CEO, David Garofalo. By using our two Canon 5Ds, one Canon 7D, and our Philip Bloom Slider for movement, we were able to create what we believe is definitely a more filmic, personable, and therefore more effective delivery of his message.

While we were there, we also had the opportunity to film John Vincic, Vice President, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications. In the video he talks about how HudBay’s new online HudBay XChange Intranet site will accomplish everything mentioned in the first paragraph, creating a tight knit and communicative company using multimedia.

So cheers to David Garofalo and John Vincic for doing a great job on set, and HudBay Minerals for being yet another company in the mining industry that is utilizing the power of video to its fullest potential.

Well no, I’m not… But after Stan and I recently spent some time in Buenos Aires and Mendoza, I at least believed I could have been Argentinian in a past life. There was just something so incredibly natural and comfortable about Argentina that made me feel so intrinsically at one with both the people and the culture. Let me explain.

They eat late – I mean they eat really late. Typically restaurants don’t begin to fill up until 10pm even on weekdays. Surprisingly this is no different from my typical eating schedule in Canada. Whether it is because of circumstance or appetite I often eat only when the sun goes down.

They love their meat – I could eat Argentinian beef/steak everyday, for every meal, and believe you me, I did during my time there.

Beer and wine flow like water – In one instance while eating at a restaurant in Mendoza, I found it quite amazing to discover that a bottle of beer was equal in price to a bottle of water. And I love a good beer. I’m no alcoholic, not by a long shot, but I easily might be one in Argentina, particularly because of the next point…

Wine is cheap and tastes amazing – My favorite type of wine has always been Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon. Therefore, I had an abundance of wine to choose from.

In general, they love to eat, drink, and lounge on patios, often in picturesque settings – although sharing candle-lit dinners with my girlfriend would have been ideal, it was still incredibly carefree and relaxing having a meal and drink with Stan on the beautiful streets of Mendoza and Buenos Aires.

Siestas – Because I was working for the majority of the trip, I wasn’t able to participate in this tradition. However, I love the idea. Keith, I firmly believe we should implement naps after lunch? But not with each other of course...

Beautiful people – Suffice to say, it wasn’t hard to spot good-looking people. The sidewalks could have very well been fashion runways. And lets face it, I fit right in! Yes? (For people who know me, it is not necessary to answer that question, thank you…)

In any case, Stan and I thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We had originally gone to Argentina to film a corporate video for Goldcorp, which you can see here. But with a couple extra days off in Buenos Aires, we thought it would be a great idea to capture the fantastic architecture, people, and streets of the city. So with our trusty Canon 7D and 5D we set out to shoot two very distinct shoot-off pieces, which I believe turned out quite well.

Now because the airlines had lost our tripods it presented us with quite a challenge. Yet, this also gave us an opportunity to try something new and innovative. In my case, shooting handheld with both the 50mm and 85mm lens with no image stabilizer, inevitably meant shaky footage. Therefore I decided to try a technique in post-production (After Effects) that would take the look of my DSLR footage and convert it to an imitated 8mm film effect. I was quite happy with how it turned out and thought that it really complimented the subject and the originally shaky footage, by adding a vintage and nostalgic feel.

* Be sure to subscribe to our blog, as we’ll soon be releasing a tutorial on how to turn your DSLR footage into 8mm film.

Stan’s piece however had a completely different feel and look than mine. He spent the entirety of his shoot-off time at Recoleta Cemetery. He captured some of the most unique and awe-inspiring mausoleums and statues I have ever seen. Through his composition, use of shadows, reflections, slight camera movement, coloring, and sound track he created an extremely eerie, yet incredibly beautiful piece.

Lesson of the day: When shooting without a tripod, monopod, or image stabilizer on the lens, Final Cut Pro’s “smooth cam” and/or imitating 8mm film will save your shaky footage.

I came to Silverpoint Media Inc. in March. For my very first project, I had to design and animate two Pdoink stories. I was first briefed according to what the client had requested and then I was left to make the stories come to life. My co-worker, Josh, had already completed the first animation for book one, thus I was left to finish books two and three. When I saw the first animation my mind went, pardon the expression, "bananas"! I thought to myself, I really want to bring this book to life.

To complete this task, I had to really capture both the essence and message of each page. I ended up reading the full book eight to ten times by the time the project was finished. However, as I discovered, creating movement for the pictures and text was no easy task. Since it was a book that had to be printed, the images were all combined to one. To create any sort of animation or movement, I had to: select what I wanted to animate in Photoshop, cut around it, fill in the empty spaces, and then draw the missing piece. Furthermore, I had to keep in mind that the pictures had to be seamless in order to match the artist/illustrator's style.

The subtle movements of zooming in and out, fading texts, and background music, and a hundred layers later - all created in After Effects - create a totally different experience than the printed book. The viewer, whether it be mom or dad or son or daughter, will feel engaged with the characters from the book and this will in turn make the stories of Pdoink more memorable for the entire family.

With the overwhelming growth of popularity in MMA in Toronto, spurred by the UFC, we as fans of the sport were inspired to create an MMA video as a tribute and promotion for boxing and mixed martial arts.

Fight night was the first of its kind for me. The task was to add motion graphics to MMA footage we shot at a mixed martial arts gym. My main concern was figuring out how to capture the full essence of the video and how to utilize the graphics without overshadowing the video sequence. Looking back over the process, I can't even recount the number of times where I worked on something for an hour, only to delete and start all over again. However, in the end, I think these were all necessary risks I took in order to take this production to the next level.

To really capture the essence of the video, I decided to involve some of the team by asking them to list some words that they associate with "fighter." I received a bunch of good words I could use from courage, rage, power, and determination. Then there were unusable words such as "tight" and "hard"... I'll stop there.

With the good words, I matched them to their respective images and subsequently created simple graphics to portray them. Twitch was applied to exaggerate impact and power and optical flares were used to create atmosphere and dynamic in the video.

As I mentioned, this is our company's first ever completed motion graphics video. The learning curve was steep as I gained a lot of technical knowledge from this project alone. We hope that this increases your interest in the sport. Enjoy the video!

With each mining project, we try to upgrade our animation by concentrating on details. Semafo was a great experience because I was able to create a more realistic final product. These are some of the elements I focused on:

One of the requirements that Semafo requested for this project was to populate an area with trees.

In total, over one thousand trees were created through particle instancing. The difficult part in Maya, however, was to make each tree unique in and of itself. We solved this problem by writing an expression, or code, that assigned a random value for scale and rotation to each tree. We then applied the code to the surrounding area and presto! Unique trees suddenly surrounded the mining sight.

The client had specifically requested the pit flythrough animation to be similar to a scene from one of our favourite Hollywood blockbuster series, Star Wars. They asked us to mimic the scene in which the star ship flew across the Death Star. This dramatic effect was created using a camera roll and the project was finalized in After Effects.

We also used animated Cloud layers in order to enhance the look of the maps. The clouds consisted of a shadow layer, which darkened the land, as well as a diffuse layer, which brightened it. Lastly, in the final sequence – the zoom out into space – a camera shake was added to emulate turbulence.

Large attention to little details really helped us naturalize the animation for Semafo and created an overall cinematic feel.
